The holidays are fast approaching, and if you haven’t already, you may be planning a family photo shoot for this year’s holiday card. Coordinating your own outfit is no easy feat, so we know how overwhelming it can be to plan your entire family’s! You want each person to be captured at their best, yet how to make it all work together? We’ve gotten a few tips from expert Kimarie Martin of Kimarie Martin Photography on helping your family shine.
1. Choose colors and looks based on your family’s personality. If your family is quiet and calm, stick with neutrals…if you’re little one is full of personality, let him/her stand out in a bright pop of color.
2. Keep your location in mind. If you’re going for an outdoorsy setting in the country, heels and sleek leather may not work with the scenery. Cowboy boots might look a little out of place in an urban setting. Also bare in mind color in nature. If you are in a grassy field, don’t wear all green and yellow!
3. Avoid all matching. Nothing says 80’s like everyone in matching t-shirts and jeans. Coordinating in complimentary colors is essential, but mix it up with pattern, shades of color and differing silhouettes.
4. Layering & Accessories add interest and personality. Just like in every day dressing, we can never emphasize enough the importance of accessorizing! Layering also adds texture and visual interest to the photo. Accessories are key for kids too!
5. Mix patterns & solids in complimentary colors. Avoid big patterns unless it’s in an accessory.
6. Shoes are just as important as the rest of your outfit! Don’t spend time putting all of these beautiful looks together only to show up in your running shoes. Sneakers are ok as long as they are fashion sneakers (such as Vans or Converse).
Family of Looks
Note how everyone coordinates in grays, and navy with little pops of color, sparkle and shimmer. We’ve mixed in various scales of and levels of pattern from the subtle stripe on Dad’s shirt peaking out under the sweater to the overt, allover dot print on little girl’s dress.
Accessories are just as important for kids!
